Frequently asked questions
Here is the list of frequently asked questions about speed and electric bikes.
Is it possible to go faster than 25 km/h ?
If you are in descent or on the flat and that the wind is not contrary, the assistance will cut at 25km/h. You will however have a speed higher than 25 km/h while pedaling. There is no “limiter”.
What is the maximum speed of an electric bicycle?
There is no maximum speed. For example, the cyclists of the Tour de France can go downhill at more than 100 km/h and they don’t have motors. So you can go downhill at a speed of 40 to 60 km/h. Of course, the conditions must be good and be careful not to cut the corners.
Can you “unbridle” your electric bike?
The manufacturers limit the bikes to a maximum assistance but the capacity of the motors allows to go faster. By searching on the Internet, you will be able to find “unbridling kits” or techniques so that the motor cuts out around 27 -30 km/h. For safety reasons, the Top Ebike team strongly advises you not to unbridle your electric bike. The braking and other components are adapted to ride with assistance at hight speed. With an unbridled bike that goes much faster, the components are no longer correctly sized. You are therefore taking risks that can lead to an accident. In case of a service, the manufacturers can also detect the unbridled kits or applications. In this case you can lose the warranty on your bike.
I saw an electric bike on Amazon / Aliexpress. Does it comply with the legislation?
It is indeed possible to find bikes with very high motor power on big online stores like Amazon or Aliexpress. These electric bicycles are generally manufactured and designed for the Chinese market. Chinese legislation is much less restrictive than European laws. If the assistance is not done while pedaling or if the motor power is too important, your bike will not be in conformity with the European directives. In theory, you will have to use your electric bike on private land. If you use this type of bike on the road or cycle paths, you will have to be extremely careful. Insurance companies will not cover you in case of an accident with this type of non-approved bike.
